Psychology of School Counseling

Catalog description

This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of school counseling, and the variety of unique roles that school counselors have in addressing the psychological needs of children and adolescents in school settings. In addition to covering the job functions and responsibilities of the school counselor, an emphasis will be placed on the "counseling" aspect of school counseling, with coverage of different theoretical models and practical counseling techniques that are used with individual students and groups of students. The history/origins of the profession, training and credentialing matters (i.e., certification, licensing), legal requirements, and ethical issues will all be covered, along with other relevant topics within the profession, e.g., advisement, career and college planning, common child/adolescent mental health conditions, developmental disabilities and their presentation in schools, collaboration with and similarities to other school professionals, multicultural factors, special education, and bullying, among others.
