Do We Have Free Will?

What is free will? Do we have it? Can we believe in free will without denying what science tells us about the universe? Some philosophers believe that everything we do is preordained by the laws of cause and effect, and that this means we do not have free will. If we do not have free will, does that mean that nobody deserves to be punished for immoral actions—and that nobody deserves to be praised for noble actions? Can there be morality of any kind in a universe without free will? And could it be that the discovery of quantum mechanics, and the indeterministic universe it reveals, mean that we have free will after all—or does this just mean that some of our actions may really be random, as if we were rolling dice to decide what to do with our lives?
