Catalog description

What is social justice? What does social justice (and injustice) mean in the context of a diverse, global city like New York? We will address these questions by examining how our ideas about justice and injustice measure up against the everyday experiences of people from different social groups in urban contexts from the U.S. and around the world. The course will provide a survey of classic and contemporary ethnographies of urban life (qualitative case studies relying primarily on observation), with an emphasis on relationships of power, privilege, and inequality, and a special focus on Latinx communities and the immigrant experience.
