This class examines the history of the Caribbean through an interdisciplinary lens centered on the political, economic, and cultural legacies of Indigenous and African people on the region’s transformation through processes of European colonization, dispossession, and enslavement. We explore cases such as Cuba (Cubanacana), the Dominican Republic (Quisqueya), and Puerto Rico (Borinquen) and consider the different ways they have been shaped by histories of nation-formation through independence movements and political-economic development. Lastly, we examine how globalization, migration, and transnationalism are reshaping these nations.
