This course provides a critical understanding of changes in the Middle East within the context of global affairs. Major themes include the rise and expansion of Islam, the rise and fall of the Ottoman and Safavid Empires, the impact of colonialism and imperialism, anti-colonialism and nationalism, the emergence of the contemporary state system, the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts, the Iranian Revolution, Iraq wars, American sanctions, and the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS). It concludes by discussing the important events of today and offering insights into the chances for peace in the Middle East.
