Global Studies Through Film

Catalog description

This course utilizes films as a tool to introduce students to key themes, events, and theories in international and global studies. Throughout the term, a set of films will be assigned and discussed in class to enhance understanding of global issues and relevant scholarly discussions. The primary goal of this course is to equip students with the tools and skills necessary to understand and discuss these issues in everyday life and beyond. Students will better understand the role of institutions and politics in global issues and the interaction among state and non-state actors involved in these issues. They will also learn to identify patterns of socio-political development and discern the factors contributing to effetive global governance. This course will require students to critically analyze films by applying basic theories of international studies. In doing this, it will allow students to develop a holistic perspective on global issues and their impact on society. Some of the films to be discussed may include "Argentina, 1985" (2022), "The Sea Inside" (original title: "Mar Adentro; 2004), "Persepolis" (2017), "Hotel Rwanda" (2004), "Pan's Labyrinth" (2010), "Central Station" (1988), "Snowpiercer" (2013), among others.
