Early Africa: A Research Seminar

Catalog description

Featuring classic and new scholarship along with methodology workshops on oral history and historical linguistics, this seminar will trace how scholars have uncovered Africans’ cosmologies, ideals, and debates on topics such as family, gender, sexuality, governance, well-being, and the environment. Based on the semester, our case studies will focus on societies located in parts of eastern, central, or southern Africa during the dynamic eras of expanding scale and new connections found in the first millennium CE up to the 1700s.
