This course treats 19th century Paris and 20th century Berlin as incubators of specific versions of the "modern." Themes covered will include urbanism and the social question; class, ethnic conflict and the rise of mass politics; the emergence of women's movements, youth culture, and anti-Semitism; and the relationship between modernism and mass culture.
