Explores the historical origins and development of human-rights thinking, politics, and institutions in the U.S. and, to a lesser degree, Europe and the reasons for their spread across the globe. Examines the intellectual, legal and political background of the concepts of human rights and humanitarianism, focusing on emergence of critiques of human suffering and war and the notion that all human beings should possess a basic set of equal rights.
