Catalog description

This course explores the major political, social, cultural, and economic exchanges between Japan and China from 1800 to the present. Topics include Pan-Asian alliances against Western imperialism; tourism and travel writing; Chinatowns and Japantowns; Japan's rise as an imperial power and its two wars with China; Chinese collaboration and resistance under Japanese occupation; "people's diplomacy" during the Cold War; and debates between the two countries over historical memory.
