HIST 31087
Battle Cry for Freedom
CUNY City College · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
In the mid-19th century the world was rocked by two revolts on opposite sides of the globe: the 1857 Revolt in India threatened to bring down the British Empire. A few years later the American Civil War nearly tore up the country. The Irish journalist Sir William Howard Russell reported eye witness accounts of both events. Using his diaries (now published) and other primary sources,, the course explores the forces that fueled the two seemingly disparate events and the ways in which they intersected.
