CUNY City College · UGRD · Fall 2026

Catalog description

Through the works of Indian-American Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), Indian-British Gurinder Chadha (Bend it Like Beckham), and Indian-Canadian Deepa Mehta (Fire) this course explores themes of cultural identity, belonging, and immigrant experience: diasporic cinema enriches our understanding of multiculturalism and globalization. Significantly, all three have produced films on Partition as well, since that event displaced their families at the time of independence in 1947.
