British Drama Post Shakespeare

Catalog description

This course explores developments in British dramatic literature and the British stage across the two centuries following Shakespeare's death: from the period of the Restoration to that of the Romantics. We will read plays from a variety of genres (comedy, tragedy, heroic drama, opera, farce, Gothic melodrama), secondary sources on this drama's performance history and on the politics and culture of the theater during this time, and modern adaptations of some of these plays.
