Battle of the Sexes: Sexuality, Gender, and Early Modern English Drama

Catalog description

This advanced undergraduate class will explore how dramatists such as Shakespeare, Middleton and Dekker, Ford, and Wycherley represent gender and its performance in early modern culture. The texts engage questions of gender and sexuality and the treatment of sexual and gender relations as a kind of battle. We will also explore varieties of gender in early modern representation including non-binary sexualities and competing forms of masculinity and femininity.
