Catalog description

On a dark night near an old house, the vampires, witches, and deranged killers were on the move…. Gothic literature is filled with uncanny situations and scares but it’s so much more than that. In this class we’ll consider how authors from the 19th century on used Gothic tropes to critique social issues such as the class system, gender norms, racism, sexism, ableism, and other inequalities. Get into the mood for monsters and we’ll explore why Gothic literature is now so appealing to readers everywhere.
