Catalog description

This course is an ethnomusicological approach to the study of African-American popular music. We will examine the cultural and historical circumstances that contribute to the creation of different African-American musical styles including the blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and hip hop. We will pay attention to the themes of agency, gender, and politics in understanding how particular genres arise at certain times and places.
