Modern and Contemporary Latin America

Catalog description

This course will introduce students to several major narratives of modern and contemporary Latin American and Caribbean history from the late eighteenth century through the late twentieth century. We will examine concepts such as race, colonialism, slavery, religion, revolution, culture, radical, liberal, and conservative politics, social processes, identity, and even the notion of a “Latin America.” Each unit is designed to investigate how these themes have shaped the Latin American landscape and the world around it chronologically, historically engaged with the creation of ideas surrounding identity, nation, and belonging. Students are encouraged to bring in further perspectives, and other aspects of knowledge.
