Art and Sports
CUNY City College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course explores the intersection of Art and Sports, examining how athleticism, movement, and competition have been represented in visual culture throughout history. From ancient Greek sculptures to contemporary photography to performance art, the course will cover a wide range of artistic mediums from different time periods that celebrate, critique, and analyze the art historical significance of sport. Students will consider how artists have interpreted themes like victory, endurance, identity, and spectacle, amongst others, in their work. Lectures will be organized thematically to encourage connection between athletics and the arts: topics traditionally considered disparate. Through visual analysis, critical readings, and creative projects, the course aims to deepen students' understanding of how both art and sports reflect societal values and human experiences
