Archaeologies of Slavery and Freedom in New York and Beyond

Catalog description

This course will explore the everyday lives and societal roles played by enslaved and free Africans and African Americans in the Diaspora. The course will be broad in scope, covering topics like coast African societies, maroon communities in the Americas, plantation life, post-Emancipation struggles for freedom, racial justice, and reparations. Students in the is class will also get the unique opportunity to conduct hands-on research at the Harlem African Burial Ground and the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Northern Manhattan. No previous archaeology coursework is required.
