This course explores the ways in which material objects become vessels that create, express, embody, and reflect sacredness. Topics of study include God, good and evil, covenant, death and the afterlife, individual and community, tradition and innovation, familiarity and difference, materiality and social justice. Emphasizes the relationship between texts, rituals, art, and objects across history and gauge the complex and changing relationship between Judaism and materiality.
