Catalog description
Introduction of basic concepts, such as system/environment, volume, pressure, work, and energy. The Zeroth, First, Second, and Third Law of Thermodynamics; temperature and Physics 426 Programs and Courses of Instruction heat; Carnot and Clausius statements of the Second Law; entropy. The ideal gas and other simple equation of states; common thermodynamic properties of a system. Thermodynamic potentials. Maxwell's and other thermodynamic relations. Phase transitions. Applications: the heat engine and heat pump; power cycles, refrigeration, engines, propulsion systems and energy systems. Efficiency and Coefficient of Performance. The main focus of this course is on pure substances.
