Colloquium in Race and Racism

Catalog description

Colloquium on “race,” defined broadly to include tropes of difference (often rationalized by physiognomy) that shaped the distribution of power within and across different societies, geopolitical locales, and cultural contexts over time. Its intersection with other discourses (that is, languages and institutions) of unequal relations, including class, gender, sex, sexuality, nationality, and religion. Histories of resistance from “the bottom up.” Topics vary from term to term. Course descriptions may be obtained from the undergraduate deputy before registration. Students may take this course for credit twice but may not repeat topics. Prerequisites: History 2001W; junior or senior standing; and permission of the undergraduate deputy.
