The French Revolution and how it has been interpreted and remembered over two centuries. After an introduction to the society, culture, and politics of the Old Regime, an exploration of events and historiographical controversies of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period, 1789-1815. Importance of the Revolution in the history of liberty, equality, nationalism, terror, gender, race, and human rights. Contexts in European, Atlantic, Caribbean, and world history.
