The study of the Middle Ages, from 300 C.E. to 1500 C.E. Topics include the birth and development of Christianity and Islam; agricultural and commercial revolutions; the invention of the university; the creation of the modern notion of romantic love; medieval contributions to modern ideas about race; the development of the nation-state; the extensive collaboration and tension between Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the Mediterranean; the origin of the first pogroms; and the formation of a globalized world with international trade routes. Ultimately, we will ask the question: how was the medieval world essential to the development of our modern ideas and institutions?
