Modern Zen Literature: Cross-Cultural Dialogue and the Practice of Slow Reading

This course offers an exploration of modern texts that either draw direct inspiration from the wisdom of Zen Buddhism from China and Japan or participate in a broader contemplative tradition in open-ended dialogue with Buddhism. Students will study a variety of genres, from poetry to prose, that reflect the spirit of Zen thought in today’s context. Each semester, the course presents a diverse range of readings, from seminal early 20th-century to contemporary dialogue, interpretations, and applications of Zen philosophy. As contemplative practice, students will engage “slow reading” to initiate a profound connection with the text. Taught in English. Students are also encouraged to read the original texts when possible.
