The study of literary texts that explore and reflect the momentous historical, economic, and cultural changes tied to the expansion of Britain’s empire starting in the 17th, and its consolidation in the 18th, century. Topics may include: trade, travel, and the transatlantic slave trade as foundations of wealth, consumerism, and political power; the loss of the American colonies; the burgeoning of abolition by the end of the eighteenth century. Fulfills Breadth and Depth Area Studies A requirement: Race/Ethnicity or Empire/Post-colonialism, or alternatively, Period Courses 3: 1700–1800.
