Artistic development and growth of the novel as progressive social criticism; topics may include: disease; the city; the victimized working class; the ‘problematic’ governess; racialized character depiction; unconscious colonialism, imperialism, white supremacy. Writers may include Dickens, Thackeray, the Brontës, George Eliot, and Victorian “writers of color” such as Amy Levy and Mary Seacole.
