Asian American and Pacific Islanders have a long history of activism in the United States. This class examines the historical social movements, such as the Asian American Movement during the Civil Rights era, and the contributions of instrumental figures, such as Yuri Kochiyama, Grace Lee Boggs, and Richard Aoki. Other topics will include activism surrounding Black civil rights, farm laborer rights, Hawai’ian sovereignty, post 9-11 Islamophobia, the murder of Vincent Chin, and the surge in anti-AAPI violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, among other topics. These events are shaped by broader American socio-politics, but also speak to American values and traditions
