Economics of Health and Healthcare

Catalog description

This course introduces executive students to applications of microeconomic principles to health behaviors such as exercising, smoking, and eating (or overeating), as well as to the markets for healthcare and health insurance. Students first focus on consumer behavior and demand for medical services, withspecial attention to the concept that health can be viewed as an investment in which individuals weigh costs and benefits. Students examine these issues from both the consumer’s and the firm’s perspective, as well as the linkages among consumer behavior and demand for medical services, the health insurance market, and the role of insurance in affecting the demand for healthcare services.
