Contemporary Mexican Literature

Catalog description

This course studies contemporary Mexican short stories, poetry, novels, and essays published from the 1950s to the present. The course begins with the most significant works from the 1950s that introduced innovative literary techniques and served as predecessors for the Latin American literary Boom. In addition to analyzing the use of experimental literary language and techniques in these works, this course also will consider sociopolitical questions, including the representation of the Mexican Revolution, as well as issues of citizenship, nationhood as well as cultural and social movements. Selected readings, documentaries and films related to the topics will be placed on electronic reserve in the Newman library and will be integrated into class discussions.
