Perspectives on Mexico

Catalog description

This course is designed to closely examine Mexican culture, history, and identity. Through a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates literature, art, music, and film, students will explore the complex evolution of Mexico from the Spanish conquest and colonization to the complex and diverse society it is today. The course will examine pivotal moments in Mexican history, including the struggles for independence and revolution, the impact of globalization and neoliberalism in cultural production, and the country’s ongoing search for its own national identity. Along the way, students will explore Mexico’s artistic and cultural heritage and will delve into topics such as race, national identity, gender, and sexuality, examining the ways in which these factors have influenced Mexican society over time.
