The History of Translation in the Hispanic/Latino World

This course examines the history of literary translation in the Hispanic/Latinoworld. Through the analysis of selected theoretical essays by José Ortega yGasset, Walter Benjamin, Octavio Paz, Gregory Rabassa, Edith Grossman,and Suzanne Jill Levine, among others, the course concentrates on theoriesand practices of translation. Special attention is given to literary translation.Among the issues considered are the role of the translator in literary studies,translation in various historical frameworks, and particular challenges oftranslating literary texts within various sociocultural contexts.
