Preparation for Graduate Study in Psychology I

Catalog description

This course will prepare students to apply for graduate study in psychology and related fields. In this course, students will learn and execute the steps necessary to choose an academic pathway toward their desired career in psychology, develop a competitive application portfolio for master’s and/or doctoral programs, develop a study plan for preparing for graduate entrance exams, learn skills for maximizing success in graduate level coursework, and learn about future job opportunities that graduate school can prepare them for. Students will explore their career interests and make an action plan to participate in scientific research, student organizations and activities, and internship opportunities in psychology to gain valuable experience to support their applications for graduate study. Students will develop a professional resume or CV, a professional cover letter and personal statement, learn about and prepare for the graduate school interview process, and learn about financing graduate education. Upon successfully completing this course, students will be prepared to select prospective graduate programs and will have a detailed plan for preparing their application materials and applying to graduate school. This course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Students may take a total of 3 credits over three semesters, although completion of the three-semester sequence is not required and only one of the three courses may be taken each semester. Only 1 credit can be applied toward the Psychology major.
