Focusing on the development of U.S. social welfare policy, the course examines the U.S. system in cross-national perspective, addresses historical developments since 1900, and explores several contemporary challenges, including the underclass, the feminization of poverty, and welfare reform. This course was formerly cross-listed as HIS 3005. Students will receive credit for either POL 3005 or HIS 3005, not both.
