Fundamentals of Physics: Theory and Practice

Catalog description

This course is a one-semester college physics lecture course on classical physics, including kinematics, dynamics, energy conservation, gravitation, oscillations, waves, fluids and thermodynamics. The interpretation of physical problems in mathematical terms is emphasized, with examples from everyday life, such as ballistics, forensic medicine, satellite orbits, the human ear, engines and heat pumps. Emphasis is also placed on mathematical structures that arise in a variety of different physical scenarios. This course is designed for both science and non-science majors interested in understanding the central role of science in civilization. (Not open to students who have taken PHY 1003 or PHY 2003 or PHY 3010).
