Emerging Markets

Catalog description

This course covers the growth and development of the emerging economies with a focus on economic analysis and individual country case studies. The macroeconomic experience of emerging and developing economies has been quite different from that of the advanced economies. Despite these countries’ economic potential, they have been unstable, facing episodes of high inflation, financial crises, and high unemployment rates. We will analyze the financial challenges and the systemic risks the emerging markets face, as well as the policies that aggravate or mitigate such risks. We will also study their importance in the global markets with large consumer markets, low-cost resources and younger labor forces. Throughout the semester, we will discuss the policies and institutional reforms that can help the emerging markets become key players in international trade and business.Open to Austin W.
