Minority Serving Institutions

Catalog description

This course provides a broad understanding of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), including their historical development and significant contribution to U.S. higher education. We will examine the function of each type of MSI (Historically Black College & University, Hispanic Serving Institution, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution, Tribal College and University, Predominantly Black Institution, Native American Non-Tribal Serving Institution) and the pivotal role they play in educating and graduating students historically underserved by American postsecondary education. A focus on exploring the mission of MSIs in advancing equity will be central to the course. This course integrates assorted readings, discussions, activities and assignments into the major practitioner areas of higher education, including student and academic affairs, administrative leadership, and public policy. This course is particularly relevant for Marxe students, as nearly all CUNY campuses (including Baruch College) receive or are eligible for MSI grants.Open to Austin W.
