Policy Analysis

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the analysis of public policy and policymaking, focusing on approaches for identifying problems and goals, developing alternatives, analyzing potential impacts, and formulating recommendations for advocacy andpolicy action in the public sector. Policy analysts do their work within a broaderpolitical context which shapes policy proposals and their underlying justifications, and so this course examines agenda setting, the role of values, interests, and goals, and general strategies for policy analysis, advocacy, adoption, and implementation. Students are introduced to various analytic approaches and arguments, and through readings and assignments, are provided opportunities to investigate specific areas of social concern and to analyze potential policy responses.
