Catalog description

This course surveys audiovisual works from Black communities—including films, documentaries, and limited series produced by or about Africans, African Americans, Afro Latin Americans, and Afro Caribbeans—to deepen our understanding of Black cultural production in the continent and across the diaspora. We will explore how these works articulate histories, struggles, and expressions of resistance and celebration. Topics include colonialism and postcolonial legacies, racial identity, gender and sexuality, class, migration, urban life, and the politics of representation. Students will receive credit for BLS 3053 or LTS 3053, not both. These courses may substitute for each other with the F-replacement option.
