Financial Regulation of Emerging Technologies

Financial technology (FinTech) has transformed the way people get loans, trade, invest, save, exchange currencies, and much more. Traditionally, only banks were allowed to offer such financial services to customers. However, in the last decade new forms of bank-like service providers have begun offering innovative financial services. The new FinTech service providers offer speed, lower costs, and the promise of increased financial inclusion to populations that were historically left out, but these services are less regulated and subject to various risks. This course will address issues of financial regulation, compliance, ethics, and consumer protection as they relate to FinTech. Students will examine the effectiveness and execution of the existing regulations as well as relevant ethical issues. The course will also address relevant international guidelines and perspectives.
