Catalog description

Sports Law provides students with a broad overview about how professional and amateur sports leagues are regulated, both internally and externally. Substantive topics covered in this course include antitrust law, contract law, labor law, and intellectual property law. In addition, this course will discuss the law and economics of professional sports leagues, the role of the league commissioner, different theoretical league structures, salary caps and luxury taxes, rules for agent certification, state law publicity rights, due process rights, ownership of sports statistics, the legal implications of new media in sports, the relationship between sport and the American public, and ethical considerations for sports leagues. Pre-requisite: LAW 1101
