Italian Short Story

Catalog description

In this capstone course for the Italian minor, we will explore the genre of the short story in Italian literature beginning with its emergence and extending to its current forms. We will examine how through the centuries it has provided a quick snapshot reflecting social, political reality, identity, and evolving cultural norms. The course will expand students? ability to read, analyze and interpret short fictional texts through literary analysis based on the knowledge of the relevant periods and authors. The reading selection includes a variety of short stories ranging from the realistic, fantastical, and psychological. We will consider a wide range of writers of varying literary and linguistic styles such as Giovanni Boccaccio, Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Leonardo Sciascia, Alberto Moravia, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Anna Maria Ortese, Natalia Ginzburg and Igiaba Scego. The class will be conducted in Italian, and you are expected to participate entirely in the target language.
