African American History

Catalog description

This course examines the issue of race and the thoughts and actions of African Americans from the Reconstruction period to the present. While a chronological approach is used, certain themes are paramount. Gender and class are crucial when examining the past, and an emphasis on social history will show how ordinary African Americans shaped America. Important topics include the Rise of Jim Crow, the Great Migration and Urban Development, the Black Women's Club Movement, the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement, Black Power, and the role of people of African origins in the post-modern world. This course is cross-listed as BLS 3060. Students may receive credit for either HIS 3060 or BLS 3060, not both. These courses may not substitute for each other in the F grade replacement policy.
