This course surveys the history of Greece from Homer to Socrates. Topics will include gods and goddess; heroes, peasants, and slaves; colonies, lawgivers, and tyrants; Sparta against Athens; Athenian democracy and the Athenian empire; sex and the family; and philosophy.
