The Maghrebi Novel in French: Pre- and Post-Independence

This course examines the evolution of the francophone Maghrebi novel from the end of the colonial period to the post-independence era, with a focus on writers who had been educated in the French school system. The works we read constitute a critical interrogation of French colonialism in the region, of war, decolonization and independence. We read these literary productions for their often experimental literariness but also as testaments to a particular history disavowed by both colonial and nationalist discourses. Authors might include Mouloud Feraoun, Driss Chraïbi, Kateb Yacine, Albert Memmi, Assia Djebar, and Tahar Ben Jelloun.
