Heroines and Anti-Heroines in Modern Fiction

Catalog description

This course studies selected prose works from various parts of the world in which the female protagonist, unlike in romances and epics, is an atypical, unpredictable and indecisive character who makes unconventional life choices and breaks the mold for women in her day and culture. Reading the anti-heroine through a feminist and womanist lens, this course aims at offering insights and understandings about the typical hallmarks of the antiheroine. Authors to be studied might include Madame de Lafayette, Brecht, Emily Brontë, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Carlos Fuentes, Mariama Bâ, and Toni Morrison.
