High Modernism and Fiction

Catalog description

This course will acquaint students with important works of fiction of the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. We will study the history of fiction roughly at the point at which the novel starts to become a self-conscious and problematic literary form. Throughout, we will pay close attention to the social and political meanings of both experimental narrative techniques and theories of fiction. Authors to be studied might include Flaubert, Henry James, Thomas Mann, Virginia Woolf, Proust, and Svevo.
