Catalog description

This course will focus on the function of adultery in the novel, especially in the second half of the nineteenth century, and will examine the social problems addressed through the use of this plot device. We will discuss gender, class, and religion, giving particular attention to the bourgeois viewpoint from which adultery is portrayed in these novels.
