This course examines novels from western North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) by writers who witnessed the transition from colonialism to independence. These works critically explore French colonialism, war, decolonization, and independence, using experimental literary styles. They also serve as records of a history absent from colonial and nationalist narratives. Authors may include Mohamed Choukri, Driss Chraibi, Kateb Yacine, Albert Memmi, Assia Djebar, and Tahar Ben Jelloun.
