Catalog description

This course is a study of the regulation and interrelationships of the main biochemical pathways utilized by prokaryotes and eukaryotes in maintaining cellular and organismal homeostasis. Laboratory exercises include preparation of buffers, enzyme kinetic assays, isolation, purification, and characterization of proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and lipids. The techniques employed are titration, spectroscopy, chromatography (paper and column), and electrophoresis. Students are required to undertake a literature research project and present the findings in both oral and written format. Not open to students who have credit for CHM 5900.This course has an additional fee for lab materials. CUNY students taking this course using epermit will be billed separately, with the amount payable to Baruch College.
